Alyssa Smith

(she/hers pronouns)

Hi! I'm Alyssa. I was course 21E at MIT (humanities and engineering), studying computer science and Comparative Media Studies. I started out as a data engineer and switched to data science somewhere along the way. I'm interested in natural language processing, doing useless things with Google Sheets, and people yelling at each other on the internet. I care a lot about making data science accountable to the people affected by it. I'm currently a third-year PhD student at Northeastern's Network Science Institute, working with Prof. David Lazer and Prof. Brooke Foucault Welles. During my PhD, I hope to learn more about how people argue with each other online and make sense of the communities they belong to.
